Here is what you need to do to get started; get yourself a rooster. Of course, you need to make sure that the rooster is the same breed as your hens, otherwise you might end up with a slightly mismatch of chicks in the future! If you find any of the roosters are aggressive, then steer clear.

The next thing you need to do is this; stop collecting the eggs that the hens are providing. If the nests are not already on the floor, ensure they are, as you won't want the chicks to fall out when they hatch! You might notice that some of hens fail to leave their nest and start puffing up their feathers on a regular basis. This is the first sign that they are ready to sit on eggs.

Of course, if you want to breed chickens, you need to ensure to have an adequate poultry house. This needs to have a steady warm temperature, so ensure that it is well insulated. Also ensure that you provide enough food for all the inhabitants at least twice a day.

One thing a lot of people don't understand is this; hens will actually eat their own chicks! Not all hens do it, but it is advisable to keep a very close eye on them once the chicks have hatched. The basics of learning to breed chickens might seem easy, but in reality you need to take a lot of precautions.
