  2009 Influenza A H1N1 Main Information Page

As you might know, an unusual strain of H1N1 swine influenza has been found in a swine herd in Central Alberta. This particular virus is a concern because of the apparent person to person spread. The farm has been quarantined and surveillance activities have been increased. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) leads this disease response; Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development supports that response.

If you own pigs, please watch your pigs closely for clinical signs of influenza.

Clinical signs of swine influenza in pigs include:

  • fever,
  • depression,
  • lack of appetite,
  • coughing and
  • other signs of upper respiratory tract infection.
  • Sows may experience anorexia or abortions.
Symptoms may vary from mild to severe. If your pigs show these signs, call your veterinarian immediately.

If you, or any people living with or near you, are experiencing flu symptoms, you should not enter a swine barn or contact pigs for seven days after symptoms have disappeared.

NOTE: Swine influenza is a notifiable disease in the province and any person that knows of or suspects swine influenza in a herd must report this to the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian within 24 hours by calling 780-427-3448 (toll free by first dialling 310-0000) during office hours or 1-800-524-0051 after hours. Under the Alberta Animal Health Act, information on notifiable diseases is collected for monitoring purposes.
