WHAT IS BUMBLE FOOT?

Bumble Foot is found on the bottom of a bird’ s foot where it has formed an abscess. These abscesses are probably caused by such conditions as sharp-cornered perches, bare floors, wire floors, puncture wounds and so forth.

Bacteria, including staph like infection have been identified in some rare cases of bumble foot if the wound hasn’ t been noticed and treated before it becomes acute. Erythomycin or penicillin should be given if the foot is highly infected. This can be found on the APA-ABA Youth Program website store.

Some forms of bumble foot are even caused by a vitamin A deficiency although in this day and age it is rare with the commercial feeds we now have.

Recovery is hastened by removal of the scab and of the pus core. Try to keep the foot soft and watch the healing area to be sure the problem isn’ t recurring. If many cases of bumble foot are appearing in your flock, examine the poultry quarters for possible causes and remove them.

You should keep the wound clean daily and can use an antibiotic cream on the bottom of the foot that also helps keep the wound soft.

Bumble Foot is a defect at a poultry show and will keep your beautiful bird in the lower ranks of placing.
